In our new series, Community Threads, we bring together the creative individuals that make up our TOAST shop teams and see the ways in which they thoughtfully style pieces from our new collections.

This month we visit Harrogate. Its natural wellsprings sit alongside traditional markets, sweeping terraces and a thriving independent community of bookshops, restaurants and galleries. Just moments away from the Grade II listed Valley Gardens, our shop is situated on the scenic Montpelier Parade.

Amy

Amy has been working at toast since 2019. Drawn to live music, she likes volunteering at festivals as much as standing in the crowd. Trips to London as a child took her to the beaches of the Thames. Now, she’s reading Lara Maiklem’s A Mudlarking Year, exploring the fragments of history to be found on the foreshore. “I had no idea what was beneath my feet at the time!”

Amy, 5’10’, wears the Drift Stripe Shirt, and Cotton Linen Twill Pinafore Dress.

Scarlett

Scarlett has been the store manager at TOAST Harrogate for 12 years. She also runs 108 Fine Art gallery with her mother and sister. She is currently reading Monograph, a collection of artworks by the British artist Joash Woodrow. A forthcoming exhibition at her gallery will display Woodrow’s work.

Scarlett, 5’6’ wears the Catrin Floating Print Cotton Poplin Shirt and Twisted Seam Japanese Denim Trousers

Ed

Ed has been working at TOAST since 2024. A keen cook, he is "drawn to blue tones. I like to wear this padded gilet on a long walk when there’s a warm meal accompanied by a crisp drink waiting for me at the end.”

Ed, 5’8, wears the Indigo Cotton Padded Gilet, Garment Dyed Stripe Workwear Shirt, and Denim Wide Leg Trousers.

Catherine

Catherine began working at TOAST in June 2022. Catherine has recently been reading the poetry volume A Portable Paradise by Roger Robinson, which won the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2020. “I love asymmetrical details, layering and texture in clothing. The wrap design of this pinafore gives a contemporary feel to a wardrobe foundation like this white shirt.”

I can only agree with all the comments made already. Staff are very helpful and what a lovely idea…. Valuing people… Being interested in them and models being real people so helps. A visit to Harlow Carr Betty’s and the Toast shop makes for a wonderful day out. Thank you

What a great idea to offer a window on the world of the marvellous team in Harrogate (and what a refreshing change to feature a store outside the London-bubble!) A nice way to put the “person” into “personal”, which is exactly how the team make you feel in store. Also, huge credit to the repair service in store who breathed new life into one of my oldest Toast coats (which is over 20 years old and is now, very much still going and much admired!)

I just love this article; it corroborates everything I have heard from several friends who are great fans of the staff, the clothes and the ambience of Harrogate Toast……they see it as a positive Mecca and I can now see the reasons why, having read this excellent piece.
